How to Prepare for Total Archery Challenge

The Total Archery Challenge (TAC) isn’t your average 3D shoot. It’s one of the most exciting and challenging events in archery, bringing bowhunters and target archers together at epic mountain venues across the country. With steep terrain, long-range shots, and unforgettable scenery, it offers a true test of your shooting ability—and an incredible way to connect with the archery community.

If you’re heading to TAC this year, especially if it’s your first time, here are some essential tips and gear recommendations to help you prepare and get the most out of the experience

1. Understand What TAC Is All About

TAC features multiple courses set up with 3D targets at realistic distances and hunting scenarios. Some shots stretch out past 100 yards, while others simulate tough angles or uneven footing. Each event location has its own unique terrain, from ski slopes to rugged backcountry trails. Whether you’re a hardcore bowhunter or just love a good challenge, TAC is designed to push your limits.

2. Gear Checklist: What to Bring

To tackle TAC successfully, having the right gear makes all the difference:

  • Bow setup: Make sure your bow is tuned and sighted for distances up to 100 yards.

  • Arrows: Bring extras. Tough courses mean you might lose or break a few.

  • Rangefinder: Crucial for judging those steep angles accurately.

  • Backpack or hip quiver: To carry arrows, hydration, and essentials.

  • Field points: Broadheads are not allowed on TAC targets, so be sure to stock up on our Match Grade Field Points.

  • Be prepared for all sorts of weather: TAC is held in the mountains—conditions can change fast. Bring layers, a rain jacket, and sturdy hiking boots.

  • Snacks and water: You will be hiking several miles. Stay fueled and hydrated.

3. Practice With a Purpose

Don’t just shoot flat-range targets at 20–40 yards. In the weeks leading up to TAC:

  • Practice shooting from uphill and downhill angles.

  • Stretch your shots out to 80+ yards if your space allows.

  • Simulate real scenarios: shoot after hiking, on uneven ground, or with elevated heart rate.

  • Ensure your bow is tuned and ready for longer shots.
